eSIM Technology

What is an eSIM and how does it differ from a physical SIM?+
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a programmable chip soldered to your device motherboard. Unlike physical SIM cards, it is reprogrammed digitally via the GSMA RSP protocol. Multiple carrier profiles can be stored simultaneously, and switching between them requires no physical card swap. For travelers, this means purchasing and activating local data plans remotely, before or during a trip.
What is the GSMA RSP standard?+
The GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) standard, defined in specification SGP.22, governs how carrier profiles are securely downloaded to eSIM chips. It uses mutual TLS authentication between the device and the SM-DP+ server, with AES encryption for profile data. This ensures profiles can only be downloaded to authorized devices and cannot be intercepted in transit.
What is an eUICC?+
The eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) is the physical eSIM chip. It is a tamper-resistant secure element that stores carrier profiles in isolated, cryptographically protected partitions. Each profile partition is independent — one carrier cannot access another carrier's profile data. The eUICC also stores the device's cryptographic credentials used during profile download authentication.
What is an SM-DP+ server?+
The SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus) server is operated by the eSIM provider. It stores carrier profiles, generates activation codes, and manages the secure profile download process. When you purchase an eSIM plan, the provider creates your profile on their SM-DP+ server and generates a unique QR code pointing to it. The server is only accessible via authenticated HTTPS connections.
How many eSIM profiles can a device store?+
Storage capacity varies by device. iPhone 13 and later can store up to 8 eSIM profiles (with 2 active simultaneously). Earlier iPhones typically store 5. Android devices vary by manufacturer and model — typically 3-10 profiles. Note that only one or two profiles can be active at any time, but inactive profiles remain installed and can be reactivated without re-downloading.

Activation & Setup

What internet connection is needed to activate an eSIM?+
eSIM activation requires an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or existing cellular data) to connect to the SM-DP+ server and download the carrier profile. We recommend activating at home on a stable Wi-Fi connection before departure. Airport Wi-Fi can be unreliable and may have firewall restrictions that interfere with the SM-DP+ connection.
Why must my device be carrier-unlocked?+
Carrier locks are software restrictions implemented at the OS level that prevent installing eSIM profiles from carriers other than the locking carrier. This is enforced by checking the carrier's MCC/MNC codes during profile installation. An unlocked device accepts profiles from any carrier. Contact your home carrier to request an unlock — most carriers will unlock devices after contract obligations are met.
Can I install an eSIM before my trip starts?+
Yes. You can install (download) the eSIM profile at home without activating it. The profile sits dormant on your eUICC chip until you enable it. This is the recommended approach — install on home Wi-Fi, then activate when you land. Check whether your plan's validity period starts at installation or first use. Plans that start on first use allow advance installation without consuming your validity period.
What happens if I delete an eSIM profile?+
Deleting an eSIM profile removes it from your eUICC chip. The original QR code cannot be reused — it was a one-time activation token. Contact your provider immediately if you accidentally delete a profile. Most providers can issue a new activation code for the same plan. Always save a screenshot of your QR code as a backup before installation.

Device Compatibility

How do I check if my device has an eSIM chip?+
Dial *#06# on your device. If an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number appears alongside your IMEI, your device has an eSIM chip. Alternatively: iPhone — Settings → General → About → look for EID field. Android — Settings → About Phone → SIM Status or SIM Management → look for EID. The EID is a 32-digit number unique to your eSIM chip.
Which Samsung models support eSIM?+
Samsung Galaxy S20 and later (S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series), Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series (all generations), and select Galaxy A-series models in certain markets. Important: Samsung's eSIM availability varies significantly by regional variant. A model sold in South Korea or China may not have eSIM even if the same model sold in Europe or the US does. Always verify the specific variant's specs.
Do tablets support eSIM?+
Yes, many cellular-capable tablets support eSIM. Apple iPad Pro (all current models), iPad Air (4th gen+), iPad mini (5th gen+), and iPad (9th gen+) all support eSIM in their Wi-Fi + Cellular configurations. Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series supports eSIM. Microsoft Surface Pro 9 (5G model) supports eSIM. Wi-Fi-only tablet models have no SIM capability at all.

Will a regional Europe eSIM work in all EU countries?+
Regional Europe eSIM plans typically cover 30-50+ countries depending on the provider. All EU member states are included in most regional plans. Coverage in non-EU European countries (Switzerland, Norway, UK, Turkey) varies by provider. When crossing a border, your device automatically connects to the local partner network specified in the carrier profile. Check your provider's country list before purchase.
What network bands are used in Europe?+
Key 4G LTE bands in Europe: Band 3 (1800 MHz) — primary urban band; Band 7 (2600 MHz) — high-capacity urban; Band 20 (800 MHz) — critical for rural coverage and building penetration; Band 28 (700 MHz) — rural coverage. For 5G: n78 (3.5 GHz) is the primary 5G band across Europe. Most modern smartphones support all these bands. Older devices may lack Band 28, reducing rural coverage quality.
Can I use eSIM data as a mobile hotspot?+
Most eSIM plans permit mobile hotspot tethering, but policies vary. Some plans allow unlimited tethering, others throttle hotspot speeds after a threshold, and a few prohibit it entirely. Check the plan terms before purchase if hotspot is important. For digital nomads sharing data with a laptop, ensure the plan explicitly permits tethering and check whether hotspot data counts against the same allowance as direct device data.
How much data does typical travel use consume?+
Typical daily data consumption by use case: Maps/navigation (1-2 hours): ~100-200 MB; Social media (1 hour): ~200-500 MB; Video calls (1 hour): ~500 MB - 1.5 GB; Video streaming (1 hour HD): ~1-3 GB; Email/messaging: ~50-100 MB. For a two-week trip with moderate use (maps, messaging, social), budget 5-10 GB. Remote workers doing video calls should budget 15-20 GB minimum.

Troubleshooting

eSIM installed but showing "No Service" — diagnostic steps+
