eSIM Architecture
The eSIM ecosystem is built on three core components defined by the GSMA SGP.22 specification. The eUICC (embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card) is the physical chip — a tamper-resistant secure element soldered to the device motherboard. It stores carrier profiles in isolated, cryptographically protected partitions.
The LPA (Local Profile Assistant) is software integrated into the device operating system. On iOS, this is managed by Apple's eSIM framework. On Android, it is part of the telephony stack. The LPA handles the communication between the device and the SM-DP+ server, manages profile installation and deletion, and presents the user interface for eSIM management.
The SM-DP+ (Subscription Manager Data Preparation Plus) server is operated by the eSIM provider. It stores carrier profiles, generates activation codes, and manages the secure profile download process. When you purchase an eSIM plan, the provider creates a profile on their SM-DP+ server and generates a unique activation code pointing to it.
The entire activation process uses mutual TLS (mTLS) authentication — both the device and the server verify each other's identity before any profile data is exchanged. This prevents man-in-the-middle attacks and ensures profiles can only be downloaded to authorized devices.

The key coverage metric for travelers is not just population coverage percentage, but geographic coverage — particularly relevant for road trips, hiking, and travel through rural areas.
Western Europe (UK, France, Germany, Benelux, Iberia) maintains 4G population coverage above 95% in all markets. Geographic coverage — the percentage of actual land area with 4G signal — is lower, typically 70-85%, reflecting the challenge of covering mountainous and sparsely populated regions.
5G deployment is accelerating rapidly. By end of 2025, major urban centers across all EU member states will have 5G coverage. Rural 5G remains limited to countries with strong spectrum allocations in sub-1GHz bands (Band n28, n8) which provide better building penetration and range.
