What Is eSIM Technology?

An eSIM (embedded Subscriber Identity Module) is a programmable chip integrated directly into a device's motherboard. Unlike removable SIM cards, eSIMs are reprogrammed via the GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) protocol — a standardized, cryptographically secured process for downloading carrier profiles over-the-air.

What is the GSMA RSP standard and why does it matter? +
The GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) standard defines the technical protocol for securely downloading and managing carrier profiles on eSIM chips. It ensures interoperability between devices from different manufacturers and eSIM providers from different carriers. The standard uses mutual TLS authentication and AES encryption to protect profile downloads, making it as secure as traditional SIM card provisioning.
Can I use eSIM on a carrier-locked device? +
No. Carrier-locked devices have a software restriction that prevents installing eSIM profiles from carriers other than the locking carrier. This lock is enforced at the OS level. To use a third-party eSIM, you must first obtain an unlock from your carrier. Most carriers will unlock devices after the contract period ends, and many will do so immediately for devices purchased outright.
What network bands should I look for in a European eSIM plan? +
For Europe, the key 4G LTE bands are Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz), Band 20 (800 MHz — critical for rural coverage), and Band 28 (700 MHz). For 5G, look for support for n78 (3.5 GHz) which is the primary 5G band across Europe.
